Manhattanhenge and Moonhattanhenge!

Those who’ve seen it will tell you Manhattanhenge is one of the best New York experiences. It’s a gorgeous sunset through the buildings aligned perfectly with Manhattan’s streets. Plus it’s time for New Yorkers to spend together. It happens every year in May and July. I spent July 11 with New Yorkers on a closed-off 79th street and hung with crowds in the rain on 42nd Street for the May “henge.” On July 11th the crowd got an extra treat  — “Moonhattanhenge” – a new phenomenon and term coined by Jackie Faherty of the American Museum of Natural History. Faherty explains that if the moon is full on Manhattanhenge, it will also align with the city grid and create a doubly beautiful effect. Next year Manhattanhenge sunsets will happen again in late May and mid-July.

Happy People at Holi

You might have seen it if you were near the UN: Thousands gathered to smear and throw colored powder all over each other, eat Indian food and dance Bhangra at the 2014 Holi Hai Festival. Holi is a traditional Hindu holiday celebrating colors, spring, love and the triumph of good over evil. Megha Kalia’s NYC Bhangra Dance Company hosts the festival and welcomes all New Yorkers to share the traditions each year at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza.
